Everything is quiet, everything is still. For once, the community is at peace and all is well. Then a blaring of noise cuts right through the silence. Feet hit the cold floor. Lights click on. Showers are started. Coffee pots are being warmed up. Along with cars, depending on the season. Noise begins to fill the once silence.
A light glow appears at the horizon, and a few minutes later there the sun is being held up by clouds. Deep purples, bring magentas, rich blues, energetic oranges and yellows, all splash across the sky. The colors, as though were painted, are bright, beautiful, and noticeable. And yet people miss it.
Instead of seeing the majestic masterpiece people build buildings, skyscrapers, factories, plants, offices, and more. They breathe in O2 and horrible toxic fumes. They honk their horns impatiently in the heat of traffic. Whistles for taxis fill the air. Fast food restaurants living up to their reputation for “fast food” as they serve their finest breakfast collection for those of us who are too busy to make a single slice of toast.
How long will it be till we create something faster than drive-throughs? Bigger than the Dragster roller coaster at Cedar Point? More connected to other people than the Iphone? More effective than ATMs? Easier to prepare than frozen TV dinners? More comfortable than the Lazyboy 400?
The honks of traffic are now replaced with the slamming of office doors. Not too many people are now out on the streets, but they are now replaced with other noises. Phones ringing, people talking, heels clicking on marble floors, fax machines dialing, machines starting, smoke starts pouring, elevators beeping, emails flying, office radios are blaring, and ears listening.
Outside the windows, there sits the sun. It’s still waking up from its deep sleep. Clouds appear out of nowhere and the colors that once hung in the sky are now replaced by the people of this city.
Blue eyes, green eyes, brown eyes. Black hair, red hair, light gray hair. Squinty eyes, high forehead, proud nose, tiny ears, long fingers, hairy knuckles. Italian, Chinese, Mexican, Arab, French. Body Handicaps, mental handicaps. Thick eyebrows, crooked teeth, cherry red lips. Fat, skinny, average.
Do we ever stop and consider the proven fact we live on a sphere? A sphere that is turning a couple hundred miles per hour and then it spins around a bigger sphere from which we get our heat and light from? Or the fact that we are just one of the billions of people here on Earth, which is one dot among thousands of other planets, stars, meteors, etc which is just dotted itself compared to our galaxy. How can we pretend it’s just another day?
This world is beautifully created even in a busy city like New York City…. Don’t miss it.
